Siegfried Bocionek, Chief Operating Officer, Siemens Medical
Solutions Health Services, presented a lecture on March
15, 2005 entitled, “The Digital Hospital: Development
of Metrics- Driven Efficient Software.” Dr. Bocionek
is responsible for technology and innovation at Siemens
and directs the development of workflow-based solutions
across all business segments. Dr. Bocionek has served
as a Visiting Scientist in the School of Computer Science
at Carnegie Mellon and has produced two books on the
topics of rule-based programming in artificial intelligence
(AI) and the programming of intelligent robots. |

Hital R. Meswani, Executive Director, Reliance Industries
Limited, was the guest lecturer on April 7, 2005, presenting
his talk entitled, “Ideas that Worked: Creation
of World-Class Businesses through Management of Technology.”
Mr. Meswani also serves on the board of the flagship
company of the Reliance Group based in India. He is
responsible for all manufacturing and project activities
of the entire group and for the business operations
of Reliance Petroleum, including refining and downstream
marketing. Mr. Meswani is a Management and Technology
graduate of Penn, receiving a B.S. degree in Chemical
Engineering from the School of Engineering and a B.S.
in Economics from Wharton. He also serves on the Board
of Overseers of the School of Engineering. |
2005 Saul Gorn Memorial Lecture

Barbara Liskov, Ford Professor of Engineering, Department
of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, was the honored speaker at
the Saul Gorn Memorial Lecture on April 14, 2005, sponsored
by the Department of Computer and Information Science
and the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science.
Dr. Liskov’s lecture entitled, “Providing
Secure Storage on the Internet,” discussed the
critical need for reliability in storage on the Internet.
Her research addresses the need for large-scale, high-performance
storage on a large collection of servers with a large
number of simultaneous users. The Saul Gorn Lecture
Series was established to honor the late Dr. Saul Gorn
who played a key role in the establishment of the Computer
Science Graduate Group in the Moore School, which later
became the Department of Computer and Information Science. |
John A. Quinn Lecture

William B. Russel, A.W. Marks ‘19 Professor of Chemical
Engineering and Dean of the Graduate School, Princeton
University, was this year’s honoree. Dr. Russel’s
lecture on January 24, 2005, “Adventures in Micro-Fabrication:
Patterning of Thin Polymer Films via Electrostratic
and Elastic Instabilities,” addressed his work
in the area of colloid and interface science. Additional
