Evaluation of Applications
Applications are evaluated according to a number of criteria, including academic performance, undergraduate school and program of study, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and candidate's personal statement.  Because this is an engineering research oriented program, it is recommended that students submit recommendations from research and independent study supervisors, if possible, especially in engineering or applied science related areas.  Students are admitted to the program based on a numerical score developed during the rating process that includes all the above factors

Application Deadlines

In order to receive full consideration for fellowships and other awards, a completed application for the Ph.D. Program should be submitted by December 15th for the following fall semester.  Students interested in the Masters Program should apply by June 15th.

Prerequisite Requirements

  • Graduate with an undergraduate degree in an engineering subject; OR
  • Graduate with an undergraduate degree from an accredited natural science major, and completion of the following minimal coursework:
    • One year of physics with calculus and laboratory.
    • One course each in engineering mechanics, electrical circuits and electronics, and fluid mechanics or transport phenomena.
    • One course or equivalent knowledge in computer science, including knowledge of a high level computer programming language such as FORTRAN, Pascal, or C.
    • One year each in biology and chemistry.  Organic chemistry is also recommended.

National Standardization Test

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required for admission to the graduate program in Bioengineering.  For those students whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test must be completed with a score above 600.  Additional information on these tests may be obtained from the Education Testing Service (ETS).
