Our APPLICATION DEADLINE for PhD applicants - Fall 2010 admission is December 15, 2009. Presently we are only considering applicants for entrance in September 2010.
Bioengineering Master's Program
The Bioengineering Master's Program is a designed for students who wish to obtain a more solid foundation of the principles of Bioengineering and further prepare themselves for careers in industry, research and development, government and academia. The program requires 10course units and allows students to choose a thesis or non-thesis option.
All applicants to the Bioengineering Master's program must apply online!
Apply Online Fall 2010
The APPLICATION DEADLINE for the Master's Program applicants is June 1, 2010 for Fall 2010 admission.
The Bioengineering department only admits students to the Master's program in the fall.
Required National Standardization Tests
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required for admission to the graduate program in Bioengineering.
For those students whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test must be completed with a score above 600. Additional information on these tests may be obtained from the Education Testing Service (ETS). TEST SCORE reporting should be completed through ETS. Only official scores received from ETS will be considered.
Reporting codes are:
For the GRE:
University of Pennsylvania Institution code #2926
Bioengineering Department code #1603
For the TOEFL:
SEAS Institution code #2888
Please note: All Foreign students must submit a TOEFL score unless three years have been spent attending a college or university in the United States of America.
Average scores for PHD students admitted last year (Fall 2009) broke down as follows:
GRE: Verbal - 611, Quantitative - 778, Analytical Writing - 5
The average GPA was 3.85 on a 4.0 scale.
Average scores for Master's students admitted last year (Fall 2009) are as follows:
GRE: Verbal - 575, Quantitative - 764 GRE, Analytical -4.5.
The average GPA was 3.67 on a 4.0 scale.
Students interested in the Masters Program should apply by June 1, 2010.
Evaluation
of Applications
EVALUATION of applications is accomplished in a comprehensive manner. A committee of BE faculty review each application for merit, considering the whole student - including undergraduate and graduate transcripts, standardized test scores, recommendations, and lab experiences. Admission to our doctoral training program is competitive and we are proud of the diverse academic, cultural, and national backgrounds exhibited by each of our incoming classes.
Applications are evaluated according to a number of criteria, including
academic performance, undergraduate school and program of study,
letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and the candidate's personal
statement. Because this is an engineering research-oriented
program, it is recommended that students submit recommendations
from research and independent study supervisors, if possible, especially
in engineering or applied science related areas. Students
are admitted to the program based on a numerical score developed
during the rating process that includes all the above factors
Application
Deadlines
In order to receive full
consideration for fellowships and other awards, we encourage students to submit a complete application
for the Ph.D. Program by December 15th
for the following fall semester. All applications must be complete by the December 15th deadline.
Students interested in the Masters Program should apply by
June 1, 2010.
Prerequisite
Requirements
- Graduate with an undergraduate degree in an engineering subject;
OR
- Graduate with an undergraduate degree from an accredited natural
science major, and completion of the following minimal coursework:
- One year of physics with calculus and laboratory.
- One course each in engineering mechanics, electrical circuits
and electronics, and fluid mechanics or transport phenomena.
- One course or equivalent knowledge in computer science, including
knowledge of a high level computer programming language such
as FORTRAN, Pascal, or C.
- One year each in biology and chemistry. Organic chemistry
is also recommended.
Financial Aid Information / Fellowship Awards for Ph.D. Students
Financial support for all PhD students is made available through a number of sources such as funds from the School, the Department, research grants of the faculty, and industrial sources, as well as from federal and foundation fellowships granted to the student. A given faculty member plays the primary role in selecting a student for a research fellowship supported by his/her grant. The Graduate Group Chair formally makes all fellowship appointments.
