Undergraduate Research Opportunities
All Bioengineering undergraduate students take
engineering design or research courses as part of their degree
requirements. BSE students enroll in BE495/6
Senior Design and BAS students enroll in BE497/8
Senior Thesis. These are year-long hands-on research experiences
under the supervision of a faculty member. Students do their
research in the laboratories of Bioengineering faculty, in various
institutes and centers Penn including the School of Medicine
and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, which are
about one city block from the Engineering School on the same
campus. Many students in the BAS program and those pursuing
dual programs can select their research topics in areas such
as the economics of health care and business aspects of biotechnology.
All of Penn’s 12 schools are on the same campus within short
walking distance. In addition to the required senior design
or thesis, students can take up to two more independent study
courses towards their Bioengineering degree. The links below
provide more details about a small sample of the research opportunities
at Penn. Students and prospective students are also invited
to explore the very extensive internet sites of Penn’s School
of Engineering and School of Medicine. A unique feature to Penn
is the Institute for
Medicine and Engineering established by the two schools
in 1996.
Through the Institute for Medicine and Engineering,
Penn’s Schools of Medicine and Engineering developed a unique
experience for Bioengineering undergraduate students,
Clinical Preceptorship in Bioengineering. This course introduces
students to important research problems at the interface of
engineering and medicine.
