Sherri is an associate product development engineer in the foot and ankle grooup, trauma division of Synthes.

Karl is a biomechanist/research engineer at the Nicholas Institute of Sports
Medicine and Athletic Trauma (NISMAT) in New York City and adjunct professor at Cooper Union School of Engineering.
David Hartenbaum, M.D., BE Class of 1981
Senior Director, Customer Marketing at Merck
Dr. David Hartenbaum left private practice for Merck. His numerous positions there include medical services, running clinical trials, leading an advocate development group, product management, and managed care contracting.

PENN ALUM SPEAKS
TO STUDENTS ABOUT CAREERS IN FDA
Ken Cavanaugh, an alum of Penn’s Bioengineering
Ph.D. program, came to speak to current undergraduate and
graduate students about internships and full-time employment
opportunities at the FDA. Ken works in the Cardiovascular Device Evaluation
Department, which makes sure cardiovascular devices are safe
and effective before they are marketed. For more information

Undergraduate Awards, 2009
Graduation is reward in itself, but in addition several students every year are honored by receiving bioengineering and school-wide awards. This year’s award honorees appear below.
The Albert Giandomenico Award
The Albert Giandomenico Award is presented annually to the highest achieving laboratory group selected from the undergraduate laboratory courses taught in the Department of Bioengineering curriculum. The award is intended to reflect several traits that include teamwork, leadership, creativity, and knowledge applied to discovery-based learning in the laboratory.

The Bioengineering Senior Design Award
This award is given each year by the faculty of Bioengineering to the graduating senior, who, in the conduct of his or her senior project, has best demonstrated originality and creativity in the application of engineering principles to the solution of a biomedical problem.

The Bioengineering Student Leadership Award
This award was established by the faculty of the Department of Bioengineering and is given annually to a student in bioengineering who has demonstrated, through a combination of academic performance, service, leadership, and personal qualities, that he or she will be a credit to the department, the school, and the university.

The Biomedical Applied Science Senior Project Award
This award is given each year by the faculty of bioengineering to the graduating senior or team who, in the conduct of their senior project and its societal context and goals, has best demonstrated originality and creativity in the integration of knowledge from the fields of engineering, science, health care, public policy, business or other relevant fields.

The Herman P. Schwan Bioengineering Award
The Herman P. Schwan Award was established by the faculty of the Department of Bioengineering as an enduring tribute to their colleague and friend, in honor and recognition of his outstanding achievements in bioengineering, and in commemoration of the receipt of his honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1986 from the university. This award is given each year to a graduating senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated the highest standards of scholarship and academic achievement.

The Hugo Otto Wolf Memorial Prize, founded by Otto C. Wolf in memory of his son, is awarded to that member of the senior class in each department of the School of Engineering and Applied Science who, during the senior year, by the thoroughness and originality of his or her work, meets with the greatest approval of the professors in charge.

The Engineering Alumni Society E.
