How do I block Cyrillic ("Russian") spam?

There is a Cyrillic spam blocking option on the SEAS account management website. To activate it, follow these instructions:

  1. Login to the SEAS Account Management website using your username and password.
  2. Click on the Spam Blocker, Blocked/Allowed Addresses link in the left navigation area.
  3. Part way down the spam blocker page you will see Alphabet Specific Blocking. If you wish to block messages whose subjects or from line contain Cyrillic characters, click Yes next to Block all emails in CYRILLIC.

Note: Since the filter blocks messages with Cyrillic in the from line, it could block a perfectly readable message from someone who usually spells their name in Cyrillic characters. In addition, since it does not check the message body for Cyrillic (to save time), it may allow a message through that contains Cyrillic only in the message body.
  4. Click the Update Email Filters button at the bottom of the page.

If you have other alphabets you would like to block or run into any problems with the filter, please send an email to cets@seas. If we receive enough requests to block other alphabets or languages, we will add them to this list.
