Penn Engineering CETS Answers

When does my SEAS account expire?

If you are a May graduate, your account will expire the October after graduation, but your Penn Engineering email address should continue to work as long as you have a forwarding address on the Penn alumni system.

Penn Engineering accounts are available for all current SEAS faculty, staff, and students, plus students from other schools who are registered for SEAS courses. If you leave SEAS by graduating, transferring to another school, or (for non-SEAS students) not continuing to take SEAS courses, then your account will be expired afterwards, usually in the March or October after you leave.

When an account is expired, it is not immediately locked or removed. First, an electronic mail message is sent to the account explaining that the account has expired and will be removed in six weeks.

If there has been some error (most often a changed PennCard number or a problem in course registration), the mail message will explain how to clear up the matter and prevent the account from being removed. The mail message also explains how to set up mail forwarding, etc. A similar mail message is sent one week before the account is due to be removed.

Information for Graduating Seniors

Penn's Alumni system provides its members with free perpetual email forwarding after your SEAS account has been removed. Take these steps to ensure email continuity:
  1. Get an account from an ISP in your local area. Make sure it works.
  2. Sign up for alumni e-mail forwarding to your ISP account at http://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/UPN/
  3. Set your SEAS account to forward to your alumni address by visiting https://www.seas.upenn.edu/accounts. Choose "configure your email account" and "Mail Forwarding".
This way, mail sent to you at SEAS will immediately go to the alumni forwarding system, then the ISP account. If you change your email address in the future, reset the alumni forwarding.

Note: Once your SEAS account has been deleted, mail will only be forwarded. All other special features, such as Spamblock and other filtering, will no longer apply, and will need to be set up by the user at the server mail is being forwarded to, or at a home client.

For information on obtaining other accounts after graduation, please see the answers article, "What type of accounts can I have after graduation?"

Why doesn't CETS provide lifetime email forwarding?

CETS does, but only through the alumni system. The Penn Alumni Relations Office and the Penn Online Community provide many services to Penn alumni, including email forwarding. They have procedures and personnel to identify alumni and to allow alumni to update their addresses as they change over time, which CETS does not.
