Mozilla 1.7 and Netscape 7.2 Mail Configuration
Mozilla is one of the University-supported web browsers. In addition
to being a web broswer, Mozilla also has a mail component built
in. Netscape and Mozilla are available to download for free.
Follow the steps below to setup Mozilla or Netscape to read your
SEAS mail.
1. The Account Wizard pops up. On the New Accout Setup screen,
select "Email Account" and click Next.
2. On the Identity screen, enter your full name and email address
and click Next.
3. On the Server Information screen, select IMAP as the incoming
server. The name of the incoming server is: username.mail.seas.upenn.edu
(where username is your Username) .The name of
the outgoing server is: smtp.seas.upenn.edu.
Note: If your computer is not connected to the SEAS network, your
Internet Service Provider (ISP) may require a different SMTP server
setting. If you have trouble sending mail, please check with your
ISP for the correct setting.

4. On the User Name screen, enter your SEAS user
name, click Next.
5. On the Account Name screen, enter a name by which you would like
to refer to this email account, click Next.
6. On the Congratulations screen, review the information to make
sure it is correct and click Finish.
IMPORTANT: At this time you will be prompted to
enter your password. Hit Cancel. You are not yet set up to send
your data over a secure channel at this point (SSL).
7. Now that you are done with the Account Wizard, Go to "Edit
| Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings"
(A) Select your SEAS account from the left
hand list.
- Change the Email Address to USERNAME@seas.upenn.edu
(where USERNAME is your Username).
- Enter your name and email address if they are not already
there.
(B) Select "Server Settings" from
the left hand list and follow the configuration settings below.

- Server name should be: USERNAME.mail.seas.upenn.edu
(where USERNAME is your Username)
- Ensure "Use secure connection (SSL)" is checked.
- Check for new messages every X minutes: Ensure
this is checked. You can check for new messages as frequently
as every 6 minutes.
- It is recommended that you also check "Clean
up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit" and "Empty
Trash on Exit"
- Click the "Advanced" button. You will see the below
dialog box appear. Your IMAP server directory
should be set to: ~/Mail/. Ensure the two check
boxes underneath the IMAP server directory are unchecked.
(C) Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" from
the left hand list.
- Make sure your username is entered correctly
- Make sure "Use secure connection (SSL)" is
set to Always.
If you have multiple SEAS account profiles created, repeat the
above steps for each account.
Click OK to save your settings in the "Mail & Newsgroups
Account Settings" dialog box.
8. Go to "Edit" >> "Preferences". Click
on "Privacy & Security" in the left hand category
list. Then click on "Images". Check the box for "Do
not load remote images in Mail & Newsgroup messages." Click
"OK". Disabling automatic downloading of HTML images helps
protect your privacy. By automatically downloading images from an
email you are communicating with an external server and this verifies
that your email address is valid, possibly making you a target for
more junk mail.
9. Click OK to save your changes in the Preferences dialog box.
Send yourself a test message, and check for new
messages. If you do not receive the test message, use webmail
and send email to CETS
explaining the problem and any error messages you have received.
You can configure Mozilla to access Penn's Online Directory.
