Transferring files via Unix

If you are transferring the files to a unix machine, I would recommend creating a compressed "tar" archive containing all of your files.

The following commands

% cd ~
% tar cf - . | compress > /tmp/allfiles.tar.Z

will create a compressed tar archive named allfiles.tar.Z in the /tmp directory, which you can then FTP to another system. Not that this will only contain the files in your home directory tree; it will not contain your mail "inbox".

Be careful when extracting the files from this archive on another unix system. If you extract all of these files into your new home directory, you will replace the configuration files appropriate for that machine with the ones from Eniac. Eniac configuration files will not work correctly on other machines.
