Virtual PC Lab
Problem:
CETS has a number of licensed applications which can only be run from our
PC labs. Often during the busy times of the year, labs tend to be completely
full and users who have specific needs for programs have no choice but to
wait until a machine opens up. Many students have his or her own computer, and a good chunk
of them have really fast network connections to Penn. Until now, there has been no
way for these students to sit in the comfort of their dorm rooms (or
apartments) and use our applications. The Virtual SEAS PC lab solves this
problem.
Solution:
The Virtual SEAS PC Lab is a new tool using VNC (Virtual Networking
Computer) to give SEAS students/faculty/staff the ability to log into
a SEAS Computer Lab PC remotely from home. To use this new tool you
must first download the VNC viewer for your specific platform. After
downloading the program, you may run it without installing and just
enter "vlab.seas.upenn.edu:0"
as the server to connect to. You will need a password to gain
access and this password is available through the CETS office (you
must show a valid Penn Card to obtain the password). Once you get
to the start screen, you will be able to log in the same way you log
into the PC's in the SEAS Labs. Also, students should log out in the
normal way that they do when using PC labs by clicking the "log-out"
button instead of simply closing the VNC window (to avoid security
risks). The downloads for the VNC viewers for PC and Macs are below.
The technology we're using is VNC* and it
basically allows individuals from a Windows, Mac, Unix or Linux
platform to log on and view the desktop of any of the mentioned platforms, and
use the computers remotely. The SEAS Virtual PC Lab is sponsored by Ford and Bell
Atlantic and the software needed is distributed through http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/.
* It is cautioned that using the VNC Server incorrectly could
open security holes in users machines, therefore we don't recommend
the installation of the server to inexperienced users.
