The University of Pennsylvania has a diverse community of
faculty, staff, and students. Increasing the representation
of underrepresented minorities among our faculty, staff, and
student body continues to be an important goal at the University
of Pennsylvania.
The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) has
a long history of leadership and commitment in identifying,
recruitment, and retention of underrepresented minority faculty,
women and minority students in engineering disciplines for
undergraduate and graduate study.
Penn Engineering has a long term interest in providing academic
and support programs which enhance the academic success and
quality of life for women and underrepresented minorities
once they matriculate. Undergraduate and graduate students
serve as peer counselors, mentors, and role models.
Current academic support programs include:
- Penn Engineering Freshman Coaching Program, a designed
system of collaborative learning study groups that brings
freshmen students in contact with upper-class student mentors.
- NSF/AMP (Philadelphia Region Louis Stokes Alliance for
Minority Participation) Undergraduate Research Program,
where university Science, Engineering, & mathematics
(SEM) students work on leading edge research in various
disciplines for faculty members in the School of Engineering
and Applied Science, the Medical School, The College of
Arts and Sciences, and Wharton.
- High school outreach programs
- Pre-freshman program
- Academic counseling
Faculty advising and mentoring is highlighted in all areas
of SEAS. Scholarships, financial aid counseling, professional
development, problem-solving workshops and seminars are key
to retention. Career and professional development, learning
centers, and enrichment programs are institutionalized. Graduate
students and alumni participation workshops on careers in
academe and industry are highlighted. Seminars are presented
by guests and leading members of the engineering faculty.
