|Engineering a Win: Bioengineers Develop an "Epigenetic Toolbox"|
|Take a toolbox full of pieces of DNA, build biological systems and operate them in living cells. It's not surprising that this challenge from the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition garnered interest from engineering schools across the country. What was surprising was that the competition's North America Grand Prize winners, Penn Engineering's iGEM team, had no synthetic biology training when they entered the competition.|

|Lee Bassett Collaborates to Record an Electron's Quantum Behavior|
Lee Basset, assistant professor in ESE, is co-leader of a collaboration that has developed a way to record the quantum mechanical behavior of an individual electron. This research uses a spin system known as the "nitrogen-vacancy center," an atom-sized defect that occurs naturally in diamond. This research could accelerate development of quantum computing devices, and the extra computing power that would come with them.

|Cora Ingrum Receives Special Recognition Award|
|Cora Ingrum, Director of the Office of Multicultural Programs, has been selected to receive a Special Recognition Award in the category of College-Level Promotion at the 2014 Women of Color STEM Conference. This award recognizes professionals in higher education who lead successful, timely programs that generate interest in STEM among women, racial and ethnic minorities and that fit the needs of society and the corporate and public sectors.|

|GRASP's Robotic Soccer Team Reigns Supreme|
Penn Engineering's robotic soccer team now has another RoboCup world championship trophy to add to its collection. Coached by Dan Lee, professor in ESE and GRASP Lab director, the team consists of Steve McGill, Larry Abraham, Karen He, Seung-Joon Yi, Dickens He, Chris Akatsuka, Junda Zhu, Sagar Poudel and Jianqiao Li. The team took home first place in the "AdultSize humanoid" league during the 2014 competition held in Brazil.
