About MSE > Degree Programs in MSE

The M.S.E. (Master of Science in Engineering) degree requires a completion of ten course units, including a thesis based on original research or a research project report based on a nonexperimental investigation of an approved topic.

The Ph.D. degree requires a minimum of twenty course units, which may include the ten taken for the M.S.E., an oral examination after the first year and a half of study, an original dissertation, and a dissertation defense. The M.S.E. degree is not a prerequisite for the Ph.D.

Details of the requirements for advanced degrees are found in "Procedures for Advanced Degrees", given to all entering students or available from the Department office on request.
