The mission of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania is:
  • To design and deliver educational programs of the highest quality that will prepare students for global leadership positions in the industrial, academic and public sectors.
     
  • To extend the frontiers of knowledge in materials science and engineering through intellectual leadership in research and scholarship.

Program Educational Objectives (for BSE degree)
Graduates of the Bachelors of Science and Engineering Program in Materials Science and Engineering will:

  1. Excel in careers in materials science and engineering practice and research in materials-relevant industries, such as biomedical, electronics, energy, telecommunications, and transportation.
     
  2. Make use of the rigor and creativity of our materials science and engineering program to excel in diverse career paths.
     
  3. Excel in top ranked engineering graduate programs and professional schools.
     
  4. Be quantitative, critical, creative and independent thinkers who direct their technical expertise towards addressing the needs of society.
     
  5. Be recognized as leaders in their chosen fields.

Program Outcomes (for BSE degree)
Students graduating with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering have:

  1. Working knowledge of the foundations of materials science including materials chemistry, phase transitions, structure, thermodynamics, and mechanical, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties.
     
  2. Knowledge of fundamental concepts in computing, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
     
  3. Working knowledge of nanoscale science and engineering.
     
  4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and concise way.
     
  5. Ability to function effectively on team-oriented projects.
     
  6. Ability to work effectively on independent, open-ended projects, with an appreciation for the need for life-long learning.
     
  7. Ability to work with modern laboratory techniques and engineering technology.
     
  8. An awareness of the societal needs and impact of engineering technology in confluence with the ethical responsibilities of the profession.
     
  9. An ability for independent thought and expression in the humanities and social sciences.
