The Mission of the Material Science and Nano Engineering Undergraduate Program at PENN |
The department strives to provide an undergraduate educational experience at the very pinacle of the discipline of material science. The program encompasses an exploration of underlying scientific principles, areas of application, and the societal impact of engineering materials of both synthetic and biologic origin. An appreciation of the basic structure-property relationship of materials provides the background for an indepth examination of nanoengineering pathways leading to the creation of materials with new and improved properties which provide the foundation of all emerging technologies. The department seeks to prepare students for higher education in the nations elite graduate and professional degree programs and for leadership roles in education, research and development, health care, and in all sectors of the economy.
