Applying to EMTM

The Executive Master's in Technology Management is designed for mid-career engineers, scientists, IT leaders, managers and entrepreneurs. EMTM students are seeking to develop strategic business and management skills while staying current with changing technologies. Candidates come from diverse industries, from companies that range from start-ups to Fortune 100 enterprises, and from organizations in both the private and public sectors. Some candidates are financially sponsored by their companies; others finance the program independently.

You may begin your online application at any time, and complete it over several sessions.

(The application deadline for the class entering Fall 2008 will be May 15, 2008. For information or inquiries, please contact Paige Harker, Admissions Manager, by phone at 215-898-2897 or 877-444-EMTM (toll-free), or by e-mail at emtm-admissions@emtm.upenn.edu.)

The strong talent and experience base of EMTM students is one of its greatest benefits. In evaluating applications, EMTM looks for leadership experience and/or potential, strong intellectual curiosity and academic aptitude, high motivation and commitment, and a clear understanding of how the EMTM program can help you meet your career goals.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years work experience (average: 10 years / range 5-25+ years)
  • Bachelor's degree (approx. 50% also hold graduate degrees)
  • Either GMAT or GRE scores from within the past five years*

(*The GMAT/GRE test may be waived upon request for those applicants with 15 or more years of technology-related work experience or a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree in the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, or similar quantitative area.  The waiver is based on a review of transcripts for all coursework.  Applicants who are seeking a waiver are encouraged to apply early in the process to allow sufficient time to schedule the GMAT/GRE should it be deemed necessary.)

† The due date for GMAT or GRE scores may be extended beyond May 15 under qualifying circumstances. For information, contact Paige Harker at 215-898-2897 or (toll-free) 877-444-EMTM.

Application Steps

  1. Log-on to start EMTM's online application, which provides all forms and instructions needed to complete an application. The application includes:
    • Essays (3)
    • Professional Recommendations (2)
    • Official Transcripts from prior academic institutions
    • Graduate Examination Scores (GMAT or GRE) from within the past 5 years
    • Application Fee ($150): This fee is paid by credit card at the time you submit your electronic application.
There is no cost to open your password-protected account and explore the process or begin an application.

  2. Provide a Letter of Endorsement from your organization.
    • Financial support by your organization is not a requirement for admission, and is not considered in evaluating the merits of your application. (Approximately one-third of EMTM candidates are fully sponsored by their companies; others receive partial funding or finance the program independently.)
    • To ensure that you can attend classes and participate fully in the program, EMTM should receive a "Letter of Endorsement" from your employer confirming that your organization supports your application and will grant the time away from work needed to complete the requirements of the program. (This letter is in addition to the 2 recommendations submitted as part of your application.)
    • Full-time applicants (Fridays and Saturdays): Letter of Endorsement required.
    • Half-time applicants (Saturdays only): Letter of Endorsement recommended, but not required.
  3. Schedule an interview.
    • After your application has been submitted, you will be contacted by the EMTM Admissions Office to schedule an interview with one of the co-directors of the program. This is an opportunity to provide additional perspectives on your application and your interest in joining the EMTM program.

Jeffery To

“If I look at this from an ROI perspective, the program payback exceeded my expectations financially, educationally, and career-wise. I have moved into a strategic role — which is what I've always wanted to be doing — looking at things from both a business and technical perspective. The scope and responsibilities of my role in IBM has grown significantly.”
