The challenges of new business creation are made even more complex given the difficulty in defining the uncertainties which will be confronted. This leads many firms to resist market experimentation. The reality of global competition, thinning margins and new technologies make it essential for management to acquire a new set of skills to tackle the very projects with the potential to produce breakthrough innovations. Ron Pierantozzi has been involved in a seven-year research study with the Radical Innovation Group in which he and his academic collaborators identified a platform approach to business creation specifically in the realm on executing high uncertainty projects. Dr. Pierantozzi will outline the new methodology and provide specific examples of new business creation, drawing on examples of breakthrough innovation projects form technology-intensive firms like Air Products, Analog Devices, Dupont, IBM, Nortel Networks and Texas Instruments.

Ron Pierantozzi is the former Director of New Business Development at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of chemicals, gases and materials. In that role, Ron led a group of corporate entrepreneurs whose objectives were to develop the next generation of businesses for Air Products. Ron received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Penn State University and has held several technology management positions at Air Products. He is the inventor or co-inventor of 32 US patents and has authored 16 publications, most recently in the winter 2008, Sloan Management Review. For the past several years, Dr. Pierantozzi has been teaching EMTM's Introduction to New Business Initiation course.

EMTM Presents is for anyone interested in trends and issues at the intersection of technology and business. The evening includes the opportunity to meet and talk with EMTM faculty, students and alumni at an informal reception that precedes the lecture and Q&A.

“Managing highly uncertain projects is difficult for large companies. It requires a deliberate process of articulating and defining the uncertainties — a process which is not generally required for other projects. The objective is to manage assumptions and learn in a cost effective way; by so doing, firms can avoid spending big money until they have converted critical assumptions into facts. This disciplined approach is particularly important for successful new product development using disruptive technologies.”
