Global Perspectives
Technology has no passport, with science and business operating freely across borders. EMTM offers global perspectives in multiple ways. Courses address strategic issues affected by a global economy. EMTM students bring a diversity of international backgrounds and business experience, which they share both informally and in team projects. Optional program opportunities add to insights on global technology and business development.
Global Experience Program (optional)
In 2005-06, students took part in a new full-credit elective — the EMTM Global Experience Program — which that year focused on India's powerhouse companies and economy. A weeklong trip to Mumbai and Hyderabad capped their semester-long study of the cultural, political and economic environment of one of the world's most dynamic centers of technology and business.
In 2006-07, students in the Global Experience Program are focusing on Ireland's economic turnaround, and how advancing technologies and globalization have helped drive its revitalization. Their visits include both multinational and Irish corporations in the IT, Financial Services, Energy, Pharma/Biotech, and Medical Device industries. In preparation for their trip, students are investigating specific topics of interest to businesses in Ireland, as well as the challenges facing organizations doing business there.
In several prior years, groups of EMTM students traveled to Germany, China and Japan, meeting with senior managers from firms such as SAP, BMW, Shanghai Roche Pharmaceuticals, Siemens and Toyota. These 'global immersion trips' were conducted on an optional, non-credit basis.
Through research in preparation for these trips and through interactions with business and government leaders, students have gained a clearer understanding of the political, social and cultural dynamics that affect business competition in different world regions. As a result, many report that they have been able to frame better short- and long-term solutions for their own organizations within the realities of global markets.

“With the globalization of much of the technology sector, it's critical for everybody to expand their worldview beyond the U.S. ... I don't think anybody would want to put the genie of globalization back in the bottle. But if you don't learn about it, you may be at the short end of the stick.”
