Beyond the Classroom: Optional Program Opportunities

Learning doesn't stop at the classroom. Each term brings different opportunities to expand on the EMTM experience. Annual events include:

  • Executive Speakers — through the Emerging Technologies Seminar and student-organized events, distinguished guest speakers speak candidly about their organizations, their industries, and lessons learned from successes and failures.
  • Global Experience Program — organized with student input, this full-credit elective gives students firsthand exposure to the business and cultural environments of regions that are pivotal drivers in the global economy.

Career development workshops and special offerings — many EMTM students also take advantage of other program-sponsored seminars and workshops, which recently have included:

  • Business Plan Writing
  • Communications
  • Entrepreneurship through Acquisition
  • Matlab Fundamentals and Programming Techniques for Financial Applications
  • Politics & Networking
  • Project Management

Additional events, organizations and activities are open to EMTM students through Penn Engineering, Wharton and the University of Pennsylvania.

“Among her favorite class sessions at EMTM are the Emerging Technologies Seminars where she has learned about nanotechnology, polymers and other new technologies. ‘In one seminar, a venture capitalist explained how his firm picks projects to fund. It's unusual to get that sort of candid, firsthand insight. To me, that's emblematic of the range of opportunities you find at EMTM.’”

Dan had the opportunity to take part in EMTM's Global Immersion Trip to China, where he got a firsthand look at the Chinese economy. “I realized that our company could change some of the products and services we were offering, and optimize our offerings by coupling what we did well in the U.S. with what could be done more effectively in China. We found that we were able to provide an excellent value to our customers and the company has grown over 300 percent in five years.” Today, Dan says, Everite is still harvesting relationships from that decision.

Dan knew that he would benefit from the program, but he had not been expecting the results to be quite so dramatic. “Earlier, I would have been hesitant to go off to China and start new ventures — but EMTM gave me the confidence to do that. It has transformed our strategy and our growth.”
