Team Talent: Collaboration Chemistry
The value of teamwork takes on new meaning at EMTM. Class projects and informal collaborations among students benefit from the shared focus on technical and business concerns and the range of expertise in the EMTM community.
When a company like Motorola says its vision is to achieve seamless mobility within a decade, it needs a tangible plan. Moving that vision beyond rhetoric was the task before EMTM students in a corporate application project designed to anticipate areas of radical innovation 10 years out and identify specific opportunities for Motorola.
The 5-member team was a microcosm of the synergy and talent found in the EMTM community. From left to right:
Mark Pecen, PhD, EMTM’05 Vice President, Advanced Technology, Research in Motion Limited, and a former Motorola Science Advisory Board Associate. Mark has a BS in electrical engineering and an MS and PhD in computer science. He holds more than 50 patents issued and pending, and is the inventor of several well-known Internet and wireless communication technologies.
Sam Kim, MBA, EMTM’05 R&D Project Manager for Hewlett-Packard Company, based in Vancouver, Washington. Sam has a BS in chemical engineering and an MBA in operations management and information systems. While attending EMTM, he introduced record-breaking software product development processes for HP printers to improve time-to-market, customer experience and quality.

Shawna Brinkerhoff, EMTM’05 Senior VP and Principal for Strategy & Operations at Silver Start Communications, LLC, in northern Virginia. Shawna holds a BS in finance. Her 12 years' experience in IT and telecommunications included building and launching wireless networks (voice & data) in two markets for Nextel Communications, and helping to launch two start-up firms.
Mike Naimoli, EMTM’05 A healthcare and life sciences consultant with 14+ years' experience in the biopharmaceutical industry when he joined EMTM, Mike holds a BS in medical microbiology. In a previous position at GlaxoSmithKline Mike had led a team responsible for the overall technology transfer of scientific methodologies from R&D to full-scale manufacturing. Shortly after graduation, he was named Partner and Alliance Manager, U.S. Life Sciences, at Microsoft.
Jim Combs, EMTM’05 Vice President of SEI Global Services Inc., a division of SEI Investments Company. Jim has a BS in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy. He used his EMTM learning 'real-time' while leading a successful new product group that provides investment processing outsourcing services to financial intermediary clients of SEI.
