Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are there any exams at the end of the program?
The program offers two Penn course units. As such, students will be expected to perform all course requirements, including homework, papers, and exams.
Do you grant a certificate and/or grade transcript?
All participants will have a Penn transcript that will reflect their course work and grades for these courses. A Certificate of Completion will be issued at the end of the program for all who successfully complete the course requirements. Pass grades (D or better) must be earned in order to receive the Certificate of Completion. You may request your transcript from the Registrar’s Office.
I am from a country/school whose medium of instruction is English. Do I need to provide proof of English ability?
No, you are exempt if your medium of instruction is English.
Do I need to have all letters of recommendation and transcripts translated into English?
Yes. A translation should accompany the original transcript(s). Translations alone are not acceptable.
I don’t have my official transcript of my TOEFL score any more. Can the Testing Authority communicate it directly to you?
Yes, please ask ETS to send your TOEFL score report to sibt [at] seas.upenn.edu.
What is the deadline for the payment clearance?
If offered admission, a non-refundable Acceptance Deposit of US $300 must be returned with the Acceptance Form, usually within 10 days of receiving the admission offer letter. Then, final payment of the balance must be received prior to the beginning of the program.
Do I need to bring a laptop?
Many students choose to bring laptops. However, SIBT participants have access to computer labs so it is not necessary to bring one.
When do I apply for the visa?
You must apply for an F-1 visa after acceptance to the program. You will receive an acceptance letter along with instructions for applying for the visa. Most U.S. Embassies require that you have the acceptance letter before even making the appointment for the visa interview.
I have a B Tourist visa. Do I still need to apply for an F-1?
Yes, you need an F-1 visa as SIBT is considered a full-time academic program.

"SIBT was a unique opportunity to learn on the ground through company site visits. It was also a great chance to familiarize myself with the sciences, legal and finance environments."
