Subject: NIST Stimulus News
As you may be aware, on February 17th President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the Recovery Act. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) is a part of this effort with the Recovery Act. The funding includes:
- $220 million for the STRS targeted at supporting competitive grants for organizations outside NIST for measurements, research, and documentary standards support advancing NIST ’s mission and national priorities; research fellowships, at NIST and other organizations; and, the purchase of advanced measurement and research equipment for NIST;
- $360 million for the Construction of Research Facilities ($180 million for NIST construction needs, and another $180 million for competitively awarded construction grants);
- $20 million transferred from the Department of Health and Human Services to support the development and testing of standards for computerized medical records; and,
- $10 million transferred from the Department of Energy to support Smart Grid interoperability work at NIST.
This funding is one-time in nature and is separate from NIST’s pending FY2009 appropriations, which are still being deliberated by Congress. NIST is developing detailed spending plans for all stimulus funding, which will be posted on the NIST website at www.nist.gov/recovery and on www.recovery.gov once the plans have been finalized.
