Curriculum
The Program addresses the increasingly complex demands placed
on current and future telecommunications managers in the
private, public, and military sectors. Courses cover a broad range
of telecommunications and networking issues while reinforcing a
systems approach. Since the program takes a holistic, rather than
an individualistic approach, students learn everything about
telecommunication systems from hardware and software
technologies to societal and management issues.
Many different perspectives-electrical engineering, computer and
information science, systems engineering, business and
policy-enrich the program. Each perspective is essential, but the
combination is the key. These multiple perspectives allow for an
exchange of ideas among a diverse group of faculty and peers,
not only in the classroom, but also beyond.
The Degree requires ten course units. Out of the total ten, seven
course units must be taken from Penn Engineering. Requirements
include (for more details on courses, see
Curriculum Details):
- Two Core courses in telecommunications: TCOM 500 and TCOM 502
- Two Technical Elective: graduate courses in TCOM, ESE, CIS, CIT or ENM courses; up to two CIT graduate courses may be taken.
- Three
TCOM Electives
- Three Other Electives including choices from graduate courses
offered by the Electrical
& Systems
Engineering and
Computer and Information Science departments, and the Wharton
School of Business. A master's thesis (2 cus)
or independent study is also possible as an elective. Advisor approval is required.
