Leave of Absence

There are two types of leaves of absence: personal and medical and they are discussed below. Students receiving financial aid should determine the financial aid impacts of a leave of absence by looking at the Student Financial Services website.

Medical Leave of Absence

If a student is sick for an extended period of time, or has severe personal problems, he or she may obtain a leave of absence by requesting it from the Associate Dean. Medical documentation is required for the leave and the School may stipulate conditions for the leave and the subsequent return. The student's request for a return from a medical leave, made to the Associate Dean, should address any special conditions (e.g., physician approval) which were attached to the leave.

Personal Leave of Absence

Leaves of absence for personal reasons may also be arranged. Permission of the Associate Dean is required and the School may stipulate conditions for the leave and the subsequent return. The student's request for a return from a personal leave, made to the Associate Dean, should address any special conditions which were attached to the leave.

Sunset Rule

Students must complete the requirements for the BAS or BSE within an eight-year period after matriculation. If they do not complete the degree within this time period, they forfeit the right to complete the degree. Students who do not complete their degree within this time period may petition for an extension. If granted, the student's course work and full record will be evaluated, and additional or replacement course work may be required in order to complete the degree.
