Has any teacher made a difference in your time here?
If so, who and why?
It's difficult to single out any one teacher but Math professor
(and now College Dean) Dennis DeTurck is probably the one
I remember most from freshman year. He used to play classical
music at the beginning of every class and his obvious enthusiasm
for the subject made an early-morning MATH 240 class worth
attending. And he's not the only teacher who deserves a mention.
I know it sounds corny, but your peers are probably going
to be your best 'teachers' during your college experience.
From problem sets and advice on the best professors and courses
to a cappella concerts and subsidized College House ballet
tickets, peers can have an immeasurable impact on your time
at Penn.
How is Penn a diverse place?
Frankly, diversity was one of my foremost concerns when choosing
between universities. Coming from an international school
background, it was important for me to have a college that
boasted students from all over the world. One of the reasons
I chose Penn over Oxford was because of its diversity —
not just ethnic, but also in terms of sexual orientation,
academic interests, social backgrounds etc. The sheer size
of Penn means that there exists a group of students for almost
every interest-group you can imagine. There are definitely
those who may see diversity as insufficient on campus but
no university has achieved a perfect solution to resolve this
issue.
Besides schoolwork, what takes up most of your time?
I spend approximately 60 hours a week as city news editor
for the Daily Pennsylvanian — which is also Philadelphia's
third largest daily newspaper. Before taking on editorial
responsibilities, however, I had a lot of fun organizing educational
activities for middle school students with the Solar Car Team,
directing the International Court of Justice at the Model
United Nations, serving on various health and residential
advisory boards and volunteering with Summerbridge (Breakthrough)
off-campus. A note for the more civic-minded: Idealist.org
has their Philadelphia headquarters situated in International
House.
I'm also on an active quest to try all of the city's best
(not necessarily pricey!) eateries. From food trucks to local
restauranteur Stephen Starr's many establishments, I like
to say I've tried the cream of the crop. Occasionally taking
advantage of the $20 Chinatown bus to New York — by
far, one of the best deals in the city — is a cheap
way to launch a mini-weekend trip when I need a change of
scene.
