Renewable Energy Program

Are you interested in learning about renewable energy and visiting Buenos Aires to work on a service learning project?

The course features lectures by Penn Engineering faculty on solar, wind, biofuels, and batteries as examples of renewable energy sources to supplement fossil fuels.  The current energy landscape in the US and Argentina will be discussed.  The role of sustainable energy projects in low income areas will be the focus of the service learning project.

The Renewable Energy program is a partnership with Instituto Tecnologico de Buenos Aires (ITBA).  We will interact with ITBA students during the spring course, and work with them on the summer project.  ITBA is located in the center of Buenos Aires close to many historical and cultural sites.

Students will stay with host families in the Palermo area of Buenos Aires.  Penn students will be at ITBA for orientation and meetings, spend about 2 weeks working on service learning projects and take several day trips in the region.  Spanish-speaking students are welcome, but Spanish is not a requirement for the course.

Students will receive a technical credit for the spring course, and a social sciences and humanities credit for the summer project.

The program fee for the course will be about $7000.  All meals, lodging, plane flights and local transportation are included in the fee.  Students on financial aid are encouraged to request financial aid from SFS.  Grant funds may also be available to cover part of the cost.

The deadline for applying for the course is October 31, 2017.
