MentorNet... an E-mentoring program to help
women engineering students
What would it mean to you to have the opportunity to impact
the life of a future engineer? Would you like to share your
experiences with a student? Help her understand what it is
like to have an engineering background and to work in business,
industry, government laboratories or be self-employed? Provide
invaluable support as a student pursues her dream of achieving
an engineering or science education at Penn and plans her
career path? The School of Engineering has a way for you to
do just that!
MentorNet is an innovative, nonprofit, national program that
pairs women studying engineering and related sciences at campuses
across the country with professionals in industry for year-long,
structured mentoring relationships conducted via e-mail. In
today's U.S. workforce, women are just over 9% of the engineers
and approximately 30% of the scientists. And, while statistics
at Penn Engineering are somewhat more encouraging, women students
earn just 17% of the engineering, 32% of the physical science
and 41% of all science and math degrees. Mentoring is a proven
strategy for increasing the retention rates of women in these
fields.
As a participating member of MentorNet, Penn Engineering
is seeking alumni to mentor women engineering and science
students on-line. This mentoring experience is open to both
women and men. To learn more about the program or to sign
up, visit the MentorNet web site at http://www.mentornet.net
and click on the "Mentors" link. You can take full
advantage of your volunteer experience by specifying your
interest in mentoring a student enrolled at Penn Engineering!
We would be pleased to hear that you have decided to participate
in this mentoring program or other volunteer opportunities
offered by the School. By completing our "Volunteer"
form at http://www.seas.upenn.edu/alumni/alumnisociety/volunteer.html
you will help us to identify the volunteer interests of our
alumni.
We value your support of Penn Engineering and your commitment
to supplementing the educational experience of our students.
