January 8, 2007

The Faculty Awards Committee of the School or Engineering and Applied Science has selected Dr. Pedro Ponte Castaņeda, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, as the 2006-07 recipient of the George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for Excellence in Research. This award is named for alumnus and Overseer George Heilmeier, whose many technological contributions include the development of liquid crystal displays. The distinction associated with the Heilmeier name has set very high standards for this award, and Dr. Ponte Castaņeda's work in homogenization theory for estimating effective behavior of nonlinear, heterogeneous systems was noted by the Committee as "truly remarkable".
