TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATION PROJECT
School of Engineering and Applied Science
University of Pennsylvania

Mission:

To improve K-12 education in both West Philadelphia and West Africa by introducing and enhancing computer and Internet technology. To expose University of Pennsylvania undergraduate students to new experiences and cultures by providing them the opportunity to travel to West Africa to implement the Technology for Education Project.

Milestones:

The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania implemented the Technology for Education Project in the Fall of 1999. Since then, the Project has:

-- Provided training on the use of computers and the Internet to K-12 school teachers in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (done in association with the University of Pennsylvania Center for Community Partnership technology training program initiatives)

-- Volunteered with various organizations to address hardware, software, and networking needs in West Philadelphia schools and community-based organizations.

-- Installed three computer labs in Bamako, Mali (located in West Africa).·

-- Trained Malian school teachers and students to use computers and the Internet and to maintain the labs.

-- Sent 25 University of Pennsylvania undergraduate students to West Africa.
