The primary goal is to determine
the effect of calcium content in bones on the fracture energy required
to fracture chicken bone. It is hypothesized that the fracture energy
of calcified bones will be significantly greater than the fracture
energy of decalcified bones. The experiment is also intended to
familiarize students with decalcification techniques and familiarize
them with the challenges in created a controlled experiment. The
student will also learn to use raw data to derive numbers that are
useful for calculations.
A. Experimental Goals:
To determine the effect of calcium content in bones on the fracture
energy required to fracture chicken bone.
B. Educational Goals:
1. To become familiar with decalcification techniques.
2. To become familiar with the challenges in creating a controlled
experiment.
3. To learn how to convert raw data into numbers useful for
calculations.
