The purpose of this lab is to compare the mechanical properties of UHMWPE at two different temperature conditions: 25°C (room temperature) and 75°C. Because polymers generally exhibit different mechanical properties at different temperatures, it is hypothesized that the elastic modulus, ultimate stress and failure stress of UHMWPE will be significantly different between the room and high temperature groups.
The material properties will be quantified by analyzing force-displacement and stress-strain curves created for each specimen at their respective temperature. The temperature difference will be created using a heating apparatus specifically designed to heat and maintain the specified temperature. A two-tailed t-test will be performed on the three properties to support or reject the hypothesis.
