This experiment is designed to test where the strain in chicken skin is localized when a load is applied. It is hypothesized that the strain in the center one-third of the chicken skin sample will be significantly greater than the strain in the other two-thirds of the sample. Should it be that the strain is evenly distributed throughout the chicken skin, however, then the method for determining strain in Experiment 3 will have no advantage over the method used in Experiment 2. In this case, we are determining whether the Instron machine, or a camera looking at markers on chicken skin is a better determinant of the strain in a sample. Furthermore, this experiment will provide insight as to the reason the chicken skin fractured at the areas near the clamps in Experiment 3. More specifically, the experiment can be used to determine whether the fracture was due to stress concentration or strain concentration.
