Laboratory Policies and Safety

- Arrive promptly for your laboratory session. Make sure that you are prepared for the session by reading the manual and other materials thoroughly.
- Feel free to request equipment and supplies that you think might help you in your experiment from the Lab Staff. However, do not use equipment or supplies without permission from the Staff as there might be restrictions for your experiment or safety issues.
- Clean up your area after you are finished with your experiment. Everything should be returned just as it was when you arrived.
- Dispose of all supplies and materials in appropriately marked areas or as directed by the Laboratory Staff. If you are unsure of where something is to be disposed of, ask the Lab Staff.
- Eating, drinking and smoking are strictly prohibited in the laboratory. All food must be stored in a bag and placed in the spaces provided at the entrance to the laboratory.
- Close-toed and close-heeled footwear MUST be worn at all times while inside the laboratory. If necessary, bring a pair to change with you.
- All bags and coats MUST be stored under your tables or in the spaces provided at the entrance to the laboratory. Aisles must be kept clear. Wet umbrellas and coats must be kept at the entrance of the lab.
- Gloves, safety glasses and lab coats should be worn when dealing with certain chemicals, animal parts or soldering irons. Please check with the Laboratory Staff before working with any such items.
- In case of emergency, contact the Laboratory Staff, the Course Instructor or a Teaching Assistant immediately. Do not attempt to handle any emergency, even a minor cut, on your own. The Laboratory Staff will assist you with first-aid if necessary.
