Lab Intro
Goals
To introduce you to:
The Lab Classroom
- Door combo: The Moore 207 lab has a password. Find out what it is from your prof or TA.
- All labs are available 24 hours, 7 days/week. At night a Penncard is needed to get inside the building.
- Flash Drives: the computers have USB ports which you can use for your flash drives, but REMEMBER TO REMOVE THEM BEFORE YOU LEAVE!
- You are welcome to use these labs (except when a class or special activity is in session):
- Unix labs in Moore (100A and 207)
- Windows labs in Moore (100B and 100C) and in the Towne Mezzanine
- NOTE: You can access your SEAS account using either the Unix or Windows lab computers.
- Laptops:
- Wireless: The engineering complex has wireless access. You should connect to AirPennNet (which works the same way it does in your dorm), but if that doesn't work, you can connect to airseas using your Pennkey and password. Be warned, though: airseas will be taken down soon.
- Ethernet: Please don't disconnect the lab desktops' ethernet cables! Many labs have extra ethernet cables on the aisle computers - use one of them instead.
"CETS"
- The SEAS entity called "CETS" (Computing and Educational Technology Services) maintains the SEAS servers and the lab hardware and software.
- Office: near the Walnut St. entrance of the Moore building
- The CETS website has a wealth of useful information, especially the Student's Guide to Computing @ Penn Engineering. It contains info about
- FAQ's
- Webmail (mail fowarding, spam blocking, etc.)
- Reporting problems by emailing cets@seas.upenn.edu
- Printing
- Accessing your SEAS account remotely
Log On to Your SEAS ("Eniac") Account
- You will need a SEAS/ENIAC account for this course.
Browsers
- Firefox is generally considered to be the easiest browser to use across all Penn computers.
- Your Firefox bookmarks are accesible from both Linux and Windows machines.
Webmail
- When you get a SEAS account, you automatically get a webmail account
- Access it via http://webmail.seas.upenn.edu
- It's important to check your SEAS email frequently, OR to forward it to an account that you read frequently.
- To forward your email to another account (e.g. a gmail/yahoo/aol account), read about the CETS Students' Guide above.
The Course Site
- Point your browser to your course site, for example http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~cis110 (or ~cis120, ~ese116, ~pfpcse, ~saastcse, etc.)
- Explore the course site, especially the Resource page and its Getting Started section.
Bulletin Board
- Register for the course bulletin board. Give your new bulletin board (bb) account the same name as your pennkey.
- Directions are on the course website's Resources page (up top in the Getting Started section).
- Using the "Practice/Test Forum", try posting new messages and replying to existing messages in two ways:
- anonymously (without being logged on).
- after logging on
