• The Theory Behind Mp3, Section 2 -- this is the reference for MP3 encoding that we're roughly following for the first half of the term.
• ``Data Compression'', IEEE Potentials, v7n1p25 -- this is more technical. It includes the math and is intended as an introduction for engineers.
• The Mathematical Theory of Communication, Claude E. Shannon and Warren Weaver, 1949 -- this is the classic introduction of the larger set of ideas here.
