EE 511

Modern Optics and

Image Understanding

EE 511 provides an understanding of the physical aspects of optics and modern applications using both classical texts and the recent literature. This course starts from first principles and covers scalar and vector diffraction theory, Fresnel and Fraunhofer approximations, geomerical optics and ray matrices, coherent and incoherent imaging, partial coherence, and hologra phy. Selected applications from image processing and understanding, non-destructive evaluation and testing, fractal arrays and "electromagnetic bullets" will also be covered.
