A Special Session on

The Mechanical Design Issues in MEMS

25th Biennial Mechanisms Conference
1998 ASME Design Technical Conferences
September 13-16, 1998
Atlanta, GA

Much of the research on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in the last few years was focused on inventing new micromachining processes, new ways to utilize them in developing new products, and this has led to a swift growth in many directions including a wide variety of microsensors, microactuators, micro-fluidics, micro chemical and bio-chemical analytical devices, micro opto-mechanical devices and more. Consequently, MEMS devices have already become quite complex. To reduce the time and cost involved in new product development and prototyping, MEMS researchers and practitioners have begun to focus on design and simulation of mechanical components and systems that are an integral part of MEMS. The session on “The Mechanical Design Issues in MEMS” focuses on this critical, rapidly growing research direction in MEMS. The papers are invited in the area of MEMS that emphasize the mechanical design aspects.
