The Manufacturing Technologies Laboratory (MTL) at the University of Pennsylvania is a 6000 sq. ft. facility shared by the School of Engineering and Applied Scince (SEAS) and the Wharton (Business) School. The mission of the laboratory is to support research and education in the areas of rapid prototyping, agile networking, and product design and development. It shouses a state-of-the-art CNC machining center (Fadal 15 XT), a vacuum forming machine (Formech Intl, 7.5 kW), two manually operated milling machines (Bridgeport, 10 HP). ten lathes, two desktop CNC milling machines (Light Machines, TMC 1000), two desktop lathes (Spectralisht 1000), and two desktop robots. In addition, a 6 cubic inch injection molding machine (Morgan Press) will be acquired soon.
The MTL also has several dedicate workstations providing easy access to CAD/CAM and engineering analysis software. They include 12 Pentium based workstations, 3 Silicon Graphics workstations (Impacts), and a Sparc Station.
The newly renovated facility will be networked with other major laboratories on campus (including GRASP and Distributed Systems Laboratory in SEAS, and the Product DEvelopment Center in Wharton) via high-speed broad-band network links. IN partiular, CNC machines and the CAD/CAM workstations will be accessible by users in the GRASP Laboratory.
