The Modular Robotics Lab (ModLab) at the University of Pennsylvania is a part of the GRASP Lab supervised by Professor Mark Yim. As a volunteer researcher for the lab, I have assisted in the manufacturing of SMORES-EP modules and characterization of the electropermanent magnet faces. I have also designed passive modules for the SMORES project, and recently begun my own research designing a small low-cost motor module (LoCoMo). These modules are designed to be easily snapped together with passive structures to build low-cost modules and robots. Motor modules are controlled over 802.11 wireless, and each contain a simple gearmotor and custom slipring and encoder. I am currently working on a second iteration of the module, improving encoder accuracy, mechanical robustness, and adding external features like indicator lights, a reset button, and a usb port.
