Gianluca Piazza

Assistant Professor

Gianluca Piazza is an Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE) at the University of Pennsylvania.  His research interests focus on piezoelectric micro and nano systems (MEMS/NEMS) for RF Wireless Communications, Biological Detection, Wireless Sensor Platforms and Ultrasonic Devices.  He also has general interest in the areas of micro/nano fabrication techniques and integration of micro/nano devices with state-of-the-art electronics.  He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley in Fall 2005, where he developed a new class of AlN contour-mode vibrating microstructures for RF communications. He has more than 7 years of experience working with piezoelectric materials.  He holds two patents in the field of micromechanical resonators and has recently co-founded a start-up (Harmonic Devices, Inc.) aiming at the commercialization of single-chip and multi-band RF filters and oscillators.
