Puente 1999:
Project Summary

Successfully installed the first two components of our global network.

Local Site:
West Philadelphia- University City New School

International Site:
Quito, Ecuador- Escuela Fiscal Zoila Ugarte de Landivar

 

Phase 1
University City New School West Philadelphia
(April 1999)

·Refurbished computer lab with new hardware
·Networked lab for full Internet access
·Installed software packages to enrich curriculum

 

Phase 2
Zoila Ugarte de Landivar,
Quito, Ecuador
(August 1999)

·Installed the nation's first public elementary school computer lab with full Internet access
· Held workshops on integrating technology into education
· Provided advanced network training sessions to University students

 

Phase 3
The Collaboration

·Established Internet link (e-mail, web and video-teleconferencing) between the two schools
·Teachers and students worked together to foster mentor relationships and to build a learning community between the schools
·All project participants assumed the role of both teacher and learner
·All students developed reciprocal relationships of respect and trust, based on the premise that all have valuable knowledge, skills, and experience to share

 

Current Update

·Friendships and "e-pal" relationships have flourished as the communication barrier has been transcended.
·Ecuadorian University students are currently running weekly workshops for both teachers and students
·University City New School has adopted Ecuador as their theme for this year's curriculum
