Puente 2001:
Project Summary

This year Puente is partnered with the Argentine NGO Red Solidaria, chaired by Gregorio Levenson. In cooperation with Red Solidaria, we plan to put computer laboratories into the facilities of two organizations that work to help street children and adolescents: Casa de los Niños, and COOPA (Cooperación de Producción y Apprendizaje). Casa de los Niños works in Villa Miseria 21 to end illiteracy in the community, and to teach its students the means available to them, as citizens, for their own success and self-improvement. COOPA is an organization that teaches, by means of hands-on workshops, adolescents disenfranchised by the educational system and work force valuable practical skills in journalism, xerography, automotive mechanics and other disciplines. In both of these organizations the self-esteem of the students is constantly targeted. Our partners recognize that it is essential to break the internal stigmas of worthlessness held by many of the students in order for education to be of any value. We wish to provide these organizations with computers that they may reach their educational goals more effectively, and give their students the advantage of valuable computer skills.
