Folks,

If you're registered for Sasha's (Alexandra Golubeva's) Math 104 with recitation sections 221-224, you will be working with me. Jason DeVito will be taking recitation sections 225-228. I will update this page with any relevant information and announcements. Also, you will find several links and other information that you may find useful, on this page.

Current Announcements

  • Please ensure that you are registered for the course and can access the course page on BlackBoard. Currently, you should be able to view the plenary Math 104 coursepage and your individual recitation coursepage (although no content has been uploaded on the recitation page as yet). This will be an important resource for you to stay updated on course information.
  • We may send urgent announcements via email. Therefore, please ensure that your email address is updated in the 'Personal Information' section on BlackBoard. Also, look for course announcements under 'My Announcements' on your BlackBoard page.
  • Please see the List of Homeworks and submit them in time.
  • The recitation quiz will not be held on 09/13 in observance of a religious holiday (However, recitation class will be conducted). The first quiz will be held on Tuesday (09/18) for Sections 221 and 222, and on Thursday (09/20) for Sections 223 and 224.

Office Hours
Location: 4N11 (David Rittenhouse Laboratories)
Time: Mondays (10am-11am) and Fridays (2pm-3pm)
Note: You are also welcome to attend Jason's office hours, if need be.

Homeworks and Quizzes
Homeworks will be assigned in every class, and will chiefly consist of problems from the prescribed text (James Stewart, Calculus. Brooks/Cole, fifth edition, 2003). You could look at the list of core problems to earn a head-start on homework assigments. Homeworks assigned each week must be turned-in the second Monday following the week in which the homeworks were assigned, before 5pm, unless mentioned otherwise or in case of allowances for religious holidays. Assignments must be dropped into my mailbox (marked 'K. Ananthasagar') in the Math Office 4W7. Be warned that the office closes at 5pm, and hence late submissions will not be accepted.

A quiz will be conducted at the end of every recitation. Each quiz will typically consist of one-two problems, that will be modeled on one or more homework problems. You will be allowed 10-15mins (depending on the length of the expected solution) to finish the quiz.

There will be no make-up quizzes or late homework submissions (except in case of religious holidays). However, we will drop two homework- and two quiz-grades. This policy should serve as a safety-net to you, in case of any emergencies or unforeseen circumstances that may prevent you from timely submissions or attending recitations.

Religious Holidays
In observance of religious holidays on September 14, September 28 and October 5, lectures will not be held by Sasha. However, arrangements for a substitute lecture may be made for these days. Also, the recitation quiz on September 13 will not be held, in observance of a religious holiday. Homeworks due following a holiday week may be submitted up to a week late.

If you would like us to consider any other religious holidays that may not have been listed here, please let us know by September 14. This will enable us to plan the course schedule appropriately. Please refrain from making delayed claims to late submissions for religious holidays.

Grading Policy
  • Homework assignments usually consist of a little more than 5-6 problems. However, since it is not possible to grade all of them completely with the huge volume and time limitations, we will choose approximately three problems out of the homework assignment that may best represent the exercise. You will be graded only on the basis of these problems (choice of which will not be known to you apriori!), so please try and complete all problems on your homework.
  • Credit will not be denied in case of trivial calculation error resulting in incorrect answers. However, please ensure that your work is written neatly and coherently. This will enable us to read your analysis entirely and give you a fair grade.
  • Although you may collaborate on assignments, please restrain from plagiarism or any other form of cheating. Academic integrity is extremely important at Penn, the violation of which is treated very seriously. Please read the Code of Academic Integrity for more information.
  • Remember that each of you is individually responsible for the course material. Since recitation quizzes will be closely modeled on homework problems, you may want to be sure to be able to solve all the homework problems on your own.

Final Grade
The final grade will be calculated based on a weighted average of all course evaluations that you will receive. This will be done as follows:
  a) Two mid-term examinations each carrying a weight of 20% = Total of 40%
  b) Homework (20%) and Quizzes (10%) = Total of 30%
  c) Final Examination = 30%

List of Homework Assigments
