This year’s Society of Women Engineers Region E Mid-Atlantic Conference will be held in Philadelphia - the city where the foundations of our country were built as well as one of the charter sections of SWE. As SWE celebrates its 60th year, or diamond anniversary, we invite you to join us for our annual regional conference, this year themed SWE@60: A Strong Foundation for Engineering Success..
Prior to the 1950’s, women intending to pursue engineering and other technical fields had very little opportunity. Although there were notable exceptions, including women such as Marie Curie who pioneering radioactivity and Emily Warren Roebling, the first female engineer to help complete the famed Brooklyn Bridge, few women entered technical fields. The founding of the Society of Women Engineers in 1950 gave women a support structure that eventually grew into a world class organization, helping its members to “Aspire, Advance, Achieve.”
This coming March, we are celebrating the success of women in engineering and technology, as well as the importance of SWE in helping women to achieve this success. For 60 years, SWE has been the foundation upon which women relied on to advance in engineering. For 60 years, it was also SWE that provided guidance and education in order to help women break through the challenges in engineering academia and profession. With such strong foundations, women engineers are not only successful in engineering, but they engineer success!
We are looking forward to hosting the 2010 Region E Conference and hope to see you in Philadelphia!
With warm regards,
Region E Conference Planning Committee
