Mary Westervelt

Mary Westervelt joined Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science in January, 2007 as the founding Director of the school's new Technical Communication Program (formerly Engineering Information and Communication Program). Previously, she held positions as Language Specialist in Penn's English Language Programs (1997 - 2006) and as an adjunct professor of Linguistics at Eastern University, St. Davids, PA (1997 - 2005). Ms. Westervelt's work has involved teaching, curriculum design, and administrative responsibilities in specialized programs in writing and oral communication, primarily for internationals. These have included programs for international teaching assistants, technical writing and communication courses, and research-writing courses for doctoral candidates. In addition to her appointment as Director of the Technical Communication Program, Ms. Westervelt serves as an Instructor in Penn Engineering, where she designs and teaches courses in technical communication, and trains engineering students to serve as peer Communication Fellows. Ms. Westervelt holds a BA in Spanish and Portuguese (University of Arizona) and an MA in Linguistics (University of Colorado).
