The Hughes lab aims to understand and harness developmental principles to build synthetic tissue scaffolds and other biological machines. His group develops microfluidic, tissue engineering, 3D printing, and single-cell analysis techniques. The lab investigates the fundamental roles of cell composition, spatial heterogeneity, cell-cell interaction, and mechanical communication in morphogenesis from a synthetic perspective, aiming to build functional tissues and models of human disease for regenerative and personalized medicine.
