The wall is set in a green open space near the Lincoln Memorial. The green grass and trees provide a quiet, park like atmosphere that is a contrast to the stark black of the polished granite. Visitors walk down to the center of the monument along a brick path, and they are kept off the grass by a low chain fence. Along with the couples and families, there are also many tour groups that come to visit the wall. Many of the visitors are tourists who have come to Washington from other countries. What does it say about the US that we have a memorial to a war we lost? Many foreign visitors come to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial because in their country, the government only erects monuments to wars that they won.
