                          University of Kent at Canterbury

                                Computing Laboratory

                          3 Lecturers in Computer Science

Applications are invited for 3 Lectureships in Computer Science
in the University's Computing Laboratory. The appointment will
be made as soon as possible at either the Lecturer Grade A or
Grade B level, depending on the research record and experience
of the successful candidate, on the salary scale 16,045 - 27,985
pounds. One post will be permanent and two will be for a fixed
term of three years in the first instance.

Closing date: Tuesday 26 August 1997

Information about the department can be found on the World
Wide Web at URL: http://www.cs.ukc.ac.uk/ and application forms
	  can be obtained from L.T.Rigden@ukc.ac.uk.

          Research

Applications are invited from candidates with an appropriate
research and publications records in any area of Computer
Science. The Laboratory is expanding its postgraduate activities
and the person appointed will be expected to play a full part in
          research supervision.

The Laboratory has consistently achieved a high research rating
and enjoys an excellent research record, as outlined in the
enclosed Computing Research at Kent. The close collaboration
between Computer Science staff and those running the Computing
Service creates an ideal environment for research projects which
can be developed in the wider community. The department has
been awarded a Grade 4 in every Research Assessment Exercise
to date and is seeking to strengthen and maintain its research
          achievements.

The Laboratory has structured its research activity into a number
          of groups.  These are concerned with: Information Systems;
Networks and Distributed Systems; Numerical and Scientific
Computing; Parallel Computing; Software Tools and Electronic
Publishing; and Theoretical Computer Science. However, many
activities span group boundaries, and the group structure evolves
from time to time to reflect changes in the Laboratory's activities.

Several of the current research activities are co-operative in
nature, and reflect the Laboratory's wide network of industrial and
government contacts. Since the Report was published, further
grants received total about three quarters of a million pounds.

          Teaching

The Computing Laboratory offers a wide range of computing
programmes, brief details of which are given in the enclosed
          Computing booklet.

In addition to three year degree courses in: Computer Science,
Applied Computing (part course), Computer Science with Management
Science, Computer Systems Engineering, Mathematics and Computer
Science; a four year European Computer Science programme gives
students the opportunity of intensive language training and a year
in Germany (Aachen). A four year MEng degree has recently
started as have variants of the three year programme `with a year in
	  industry'.

The Laboratory runs highly successful MSc conversion
programme in Computer Science for retraining graduates from
other disciplines, which has 50 students this year. An advanced
MSc in Distributed Systems has now run for 2 years, and is
          expanding steadily.

The current FTE load for Computer Science is approximately 480.

The Laboratory's policy of offering a challenging and professional
teaching programme, good facilities and a caring approach to its
students was recognised by a rating of `excellent' by the HEFCE
          in 1994.
