  Lee Bassett Collaborates to Record an Electron's Quantum Behavior
Lee Basset, assistant professor in ESE, is co-leader of a collaboration that has developed a way to record the quantum mechanical behavior of an individual electron. This research uses a spin system known as the "nitrogen-vacancy center," an atom-sized defect that occurs naturally in diamond. This research could accelerate development of quantum computing devices, and the extra computing power that would come with them.

  Mastering the Mission: NROTC at Penn Engineering
Demanding academics, the rigors of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program, and a social life. Students who elect NROTC at a prestigious university like Penn usually accept the conventional wisdom that says a person can be successful in two of the three angles of this triangle of challenges. Keelen Collins, MEAM, seems to have mastered all three, at a sacrifice of course. Collins doesn't get a lot of sleep.

Portonovo Ayyaswamy, Asa Whitney Professor of Dynamical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Max Jakob Memorial Award for his "outstanding contributions to the science and art of heat and mass transfer."
