Summer Abroad Experience: University of Cantabria, Spain

Program website: https://www.unican.es/en/summerprograms/

The University of Cantabria (UC), an exchange partner university with Penn Engineering, is a dynamic medium-sized University located in Santander, in the northern Spanish coast. Hosted by UC’s Research Institutes, the summer program, newly launched in 2013, provides international undergraduates an exciting summer study abroad experience with hands-on research practice led by renowned research teams.

Programs Available

SEAS students may apply for either the Ocean Engineering or the Biotechnology summer program. A series of optional courses, common to all programs, round out the course selections, ranging from Modern Cosmology to Spanish Arts and Gastronomy. In addition, the programs include several tourist visits and offer a series of optional excursions, giving the students the opportunity to explore Spain´s fascinating northern coast.

Structure

The Programs are structured in two parts. In the first four weeks, students will attend the courses they have chosen. The second four weeks will be devoted to practical work embedded in research groups within the Research Institutes that foster each proposed program: the Environmental Hydraulics Institute (Instituto de Hidráulica Ambiental IH Cantabria) for the engineering program, or the Institute for Biomedicine and Biotechnology (Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología de Cantabria, IBBTEC) for the biotechnology program.

Language of Instruction

Teaching will be in English; no Spanish knowledge is required. Teaching methodology, far from conventional lectures, will be student-based, encouraging students to explore by themselves, pose questions, and work in groups. Courses will include a variety of visits and activities.

Application

Application deadline: March 1, 2013. Applications received after this date will be considered only if space is available. Download the application here.
