Jonathan Fiene Receives AUVSI Academic Champion Award

Jonathan Fiene, Senior Lecturer and Director of Laboratory Programs in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, is the recipient of the 2011 Academic Champion Award from the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

This award honors an individual or institution whose activities encourage students’ interests in the area of robotics and provides them with opportunities for hands-on experience developing robotic technology.

Fiene received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2001 and his master's and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003 and 2007, respectively.  His teaching focuses on mechanical design, fabrication, robotics, and mechatronics, with a particular emphasis in hands-on, project-based learning to bring students face-to-face with realistic engineering challenges.  In addition to instruction, Fiene has also been active in the development of numerous mechatronic systems to support both academic and industrial endeavors, including a custom microcontroller platform that has seen wide adoption both in and out of the classroom.

The AUVSI Foundation is a charitable organization that provides students with the opportunity to experience fun, hands-on robotics activities that advance STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math).
